History
Introduction
The idea of forming PPIM was first mooted by five Muslim doctors followed by a series of meetings of a number of Malaysian Muslim medical doctors during the second half of 1989 at the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 50300 Kuala Lumpur. Those who attended it came from different areas and specialties of medical practice. A few more of their colleagues joined the original five founding members to form the protem committee.

Registration
The application that was made at a meeting on November 18, 1989 for the formation of PPIM was accepted by the Malaysian Registrar of Societies on December 1, 1989. A request was made to Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim (who was then the Malaysian Minister of Education) to be its patron, which he gracefully accepted. On the occasion of PPIM’s first General Meeting on December 1, 1990, at Lecture Hall 1, Faculty of Medicine, University Kebangsaan Malaysia, Jalan Raja Muda, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, a few speakers delivered their speeches on Islam and medicine. They were Dr. Maher Hathout (a cardiologist and a Muslim activist based in Los Angeles, USA), Professor Dr. Muhammad Kamal Hassan (Deputy Rector of International Islamic University of Malaysia) and Associate Professor Dr. Md. Tahir Azhar.
During that meeting, members of the first committee were elected.

Development
PPIM was affiliated to the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations right from its inception. Apart from holding local and international talks and seminars, PPIM also participated in medical-welfare services locally and abroad, bringing its members to war-torn Iraq at the end of the Gulf-War of the early 1990s, and Bosnia a few years later.
By the end of 1998, its membership has swelled to more than 600 ordinary and associate members. PPIM is now regarded as an important organisation that is continuously asked to participate in national and international forums.
